JOHNSTOWN — This year's newest Pittsburgh Steelers draft picks are trying to get acclimated to life in the NFL.
So, our latest 6 Sports Stories segment takes a look back at the year 1989, when the Steelers drafted former Pitt-Johnstown wrestling star Carlton Haselrig.
Pittsburgh took Haselrig in the 12th round of the NFL Draft.
"I've been waiting for something like this to happen all my life," Haselrig said.
The 6-time NCAA wrestling champion didn't play football in college. But, the Steelers didn't care.
"I was lost for words," Haselrig said.
The Steelers front office members wanted use his athleticism and physicality on their offensive line.
Haselrig played offensive guard for four seasons in a Steelers uniform, earning all-Pro honors in 1992. He played one season with the New York Jets in 1995, before retiring from the NFL.
